オーストラリアでの日系ブラジル人との出会い
オーストラリア語学留学を通して日系ブラジル人と出会い、彼らに興味をもった。
彼らとの交流を深める中で「なぜ日本人は地球の裏側のブラジルへわざわざ渡ったのか？」という単純な疑問がわいたので、それについても書いていきたい。
私の通う学校Oxford House College(OHC)で出会った２人の日系ブラジル人は100年前の強く美しい大和魂を、私達日本人よりももっているように思える。
１人目は、パロマ・ヤエミ・シマダである。
彼女は日系３世で、血筋としてはハーフとなる。
祖母と祖父は日本人で、彼女の父親は血筋としては純日本人であるが、文化的にはブラジル人であるだろう。
彼女は２９歳にして、ブラジルで弁護士をしていたが、帰国後はプロのメイクアップアーティストに転職すると言っていた。
彼女とは、３週間程しか教室を共にしなかったが、すぐに打ち解けた。
互いに特別な感情を持っていたように思える。
彼女がオーストラリアを立つとき、私は彼女に直筆の手紙を渡した。
パロマのお祖母様にも、日本語で書いた手紙を託した。
パロマが卒業したあと、オーストラリアに住む私に手紙がきた。旅行先のタイから私にバースデーカードを送ってくれた。その返事として私はブラジルに手紙を出した。
この時代に私達は、わざわざ紙で文通をしている。手紙を出すのに毎回２００円以上はかかるし、届くのに１ヶ月近くかかることもある。それでも直筆でやりとりすることに私は特別な愛情を感じている。
２人目は、私が卒業する１ヶ月前に同じクラスに入ってきたロドリゴ・オカダである。
彼も３世であるが、両親は純日系で、血筋としては100％日本の血であり、岡山で産まれてすぐにブラジルに渡り、大人になるまで1度も日本を訪れたこと無かったという。
血筋としては完全な日本人にも関わらず、彼の顔つきや体型や生活スタイルは完全に南米のそれである。
2人に共通して言えるのが、母国語はポルトガル語で日本語は簡単な挨拶と数字を少し言えるくらいで、日本語で会話は出来ない。
しかし、世話好きで自分が目をかけた相手には面倒見がとても良いところに日本人的なものを感じた。
そんな彼らとの交流は私に日系ブラジル人への興味をもたせるのに十分だった、というのもクラスメイトの多くはブラジル人であったからだ。
私のクラスが全員ブラジル人で私一人が日本人だったことも度々あり、ブラジル人だけのパーティーに招待され実際に行ってみた。
ブラジルと日本の最近の関係で言えば、オリンピックだろう。
2016年の夏季オリンピックがブラジル・リオで開催された。
2020年の夏季オリンピックは東京で開催される。
リオ五輪の閉会式では、日本のマリオやドラえもんが登場するアニメーション入りのプロモーション動画とTokyo五輪開幕のパフォーマンスが話題となった。
私のクラスメートのリシェーリの話では、リオ・オリンピックまでは景気もよく、オリンピックに向けての雇用もあり、経済と治安も安定していたらしい。しかし、閉幕後には景気悪化に伴い、治安も悪化したと言う。
多くの企業は倒産し、リシェーリがオーストラリアに来るためにブラジルで会社を退職した翌月に、彼女のいた会社も倒産したと言う。
このブラジルの話から日本社会が参考にできることを考え、行動しなければいけないと思った。
では、本題に入ろう！
「なぜ、100年前の明治時代に生きる日本人が地球の反対側であるブラジルを目指したのか」という疑問が沸いてきた。私達の先祖は自らそんな大変な選択をする必要があったのか。当時の日本が食料危機だったのか。
それとも新・日本政府が植民による領土拡大を狙っていたのか？
日本の市民側の理由としては、明治維新後の日本は、いくら四民平等と言っても、まだ江戸時代とそんなに状況は、変わらなかったと思われる。ということは、家の家禄や資産は全部長男が引き継ぐことになり、次男以降の男は、生きていくのが難しかった。そこで、夢の国に移民する人たちが多かったと考えられる。

次に日本政府側の意向はどうだったのか。
移民政策を通してブラジル政府と国交を結ぶことにどのような
目論見があったのか考察してみたい。
日本政府としては、日露戦争でロシアに勝利したもののロシアから賠償金をとれなかったために、国内経済は疲弊していた。そのため日本人の移民政策を打ち出した。はじめは北米に移民を送り出していたが、アメリカを始めとしカナダ・オーストラリアでの日本人排斥運動が盛んになったため、第二の移民先としてブラジルがあげられた。その頃、ブラジル政府も外からの移民を必要としていた。
ブラジルは何故移民を必要としていたのか？
ブラジルはアフリカ大陸から送りこまれた奴隷を農業労働者として重用していたが1888年に奴隷制度廃止を行い、その後農業労働者不足となりヨーロッパ諸国からの移民を受け入れ始めた。しかしイタリア人移民が奴隷のような待遇の悪さに反乱をおこし移民を中止したために再び農業労働者が不足となった。これを受けてブラジル政府は1892年に日本人移民の受入れを表明した。しかし日本政府はイタリア人移民の事案を根拠にブラジルへの移民を躊躇した。
日本人の新たな移民先となったブラジル
1905年(明治38年)にブラジル政府から日本人移民の実施を打診されたのを受けて移民の送り出しを行っていた「皇国殖民会社」が1907年(明治40年)にサンパウロ州と契約を締結し日本全国で移民希望者を募った。募集期間が半年弱と短く「家族単位での移民」という条件のため希望者を集めるのに苦心したが最終的に781人が第1回の移民として皇国殖民会社と契約を行った。
そして1908年(明治41年)東洋汽船の「笠戸丸」でサンパウロ州のサントス港へと向かった。
ブラジルでの過酷な境遇
「皇国殖民会社」が移民希望者を募る際にブラジルでの高待遇を喧伝しており、移民の殆どは数年間契約労働者として働き金を貯めて帰国するつもりであった。しかし先に移民して来たイタリア人同様に日本人も法律上の地位こそ自由市民であったものの、一部の農場を除きその実情は奴隷と大差ないものであった。あまりの待遇の悪さからストライキや夜逃げも多く発生し近隣の州やアルゼンチンへと渡る者もあらわれた。1909年に外務省が調査した結果、笠戸丸で移民し当初契約したコーヒー園に定着したのは全渡航者の4分の1のみであった。
自作農として独立し成功する
コーヒー農園から逃亡した多くの日本人移民は資金を出し合い共同で農地を取得し、1919年(大正8年)には初の日系農業組合として「日伯産業組合」を設立した。その後多くの日本人移民が自作農と成ったり日本人移民向けの商店や工場、医師を開業する者も現れた。コーヒー価格の暴落の際には他の農産物へ転換する者も多く、特に胡椒や紅茶栽培は大成功を収めた。
現在ブラジルで栽培されている農産物の多くは日本人移民が持ち込み品種改良などを通じてブラジルの赤土での栽培に成功したものである。
ブラジルで、日本人・日系人を表す言葉として、「ジャポネース・ガランチード」という表現がある

直訳すると「保証つきの日本人」。約束を必ず守り、責任を持って仕事を果たす。コツコツとマジメに働いてきた日本人移住者が積み上げてきた信用が、「日本人、日系人なら間違いはない」という絶大な評価としてこの言葉に込められています。
ブラジルに移民された方々が貧乏と苦労の中、マイノリティの立場でありながら、ブラジルの人々からこのような表現があるほどの信用を得た

ブラジルに移住した日本人たちはその長きにわたる努力により、ブラジル社会の中で信用を培ってきました。「Japonês Garantido」という表現は、すっかり定着したものとなっているようです。
失敗を恐れずに、前へ前へと進んで行くポジティブなパワーこそが､ブラジルにいる日系人の特徴
世界からみた日本の経済大国のイメージも伴い、在ブラジル日系人への評価も高まり、日系人の側にも日本文化の積極的な受容やルーツの意識などが芽生え肯定的に捉えられている。
まとめ
実際に日系ブラジル人と出会い、友達として付き合う中で彼らを尊敬し、100年前にブラジルに渡ろうと決意した先祖に感謝の気持ちがうまれた。
オーストラリアという地で、異文化・異言語・異民族の中で自分がマイノリティーになり、毎日生きるだけで大変な思いをしているからこそ気づけた日本人への尊敬である。
明治の日本人の魂が、ブラジルでまだ生きている。
彼らと接して、日本人としての私は誇りに思うのである。
Muito prazer em conhecer brasileiros japoneses na Austrália
Agora, sou uma estudante da Oxford House College em Gold Coast na Austrália, e conheci muitos brasileiros e dois brasileiros japoneses na aula de inglês. Fiquei curiosa sobre “Por que os japoneses, como imigrantes, foram para o Brasil antes de cerca de 100 anos atrás?”. Essa simples pergunta estava me perseguindo, então eu faltei a aula hoje. Me desculpe, Chris!
Eu conheci 2 brasileiros japoneses através das aulas de inglês. Eu achei que eles tem um espírito japonês muito bonito e forte, até mais que os japoneses atuais que moram no Japão.
Eu quero introduzi-los.
Primeiro, eu conheci uma moça brilhante, cujo nome é Paloma Yaemi Shimada. Ela é “Sansei”, terceira geração de imigrante. A avó dela nasceu no Paraná, que foi uma colônia japonesa no Brasil. Ela aprendeu japonês como a sua primeira língua. Seu pai faz parte da primeira geração de japoneses e, obviamente, os avós paternos são japoneses puros.
Paloma era uma advogada com a idade de somente 29 anos no Brazil, mas ela disse “Vou mudar de emprego e trabalhar como maquiadora profissional”.
Passamos somente 3 semanas juntas nas aulas, mas ficamos bem próximas rapidamente porque eu achei que tinhamos um sentimento especial uma pela outra.
Eu dei uma carta para ela e para sua avó, quando ela estava indo embora. Depois de um mês, ela me mandou uma carta que era um cartão de aniversário da Tailandia, onde ela foi passar férias. Depois eu a respondi com uma outra carta para o Brazil.
Nessa era tecnológica, nós nos comunicamos por correspondência de propósito. Custa um pouco mais de 2 dólares para cada correspondência e demora em torno de um mês para chegar no seu destino. Esse processo todo nos faz sentir amados de uma forma especial na nossa amizade.
Em segundo lugar, eu tenho que te mostrar esse grande homem, cujo nome é Rodrigo Okada. Ele chegou na minha sala um mês antes da minha graduação. Ele também é a terceira geração, mas tem sangue japones puro e, além disso, ele nasceu em Okayama no Japão. Depois do nascimento, imediatamente, seus pais voltaram para o Brazil e ele cresceu la. Foi assim até ele virar adulto e visitar o Japão em 2008.
Suas características e o seu comportamente são de um estilo brasileiro, apesar da sua raça pura japonesa. Então eu tive um sentimento complicado, que eu não sei descrever corretamente em palavras, quando o vi.
Eu acho que a maioria dos brasileiros japoneses da terceira geração não sabem falar japonês. Eles sabem algumas palavras de cumprimento e números, como contar de 1 a 10, mas eles não são capazes de conversar.
É possível sentir o lado japonês na personalidade deles porque os dois são bem carinhosos e atenciosos com alguém que esteja passando por dificuldades.
Então tê-los conhecido, inspirou a minha curiosidade sobre os imigrantes japoneses.
Algumas vezes, só havia brasileiros na minha sala de aula, exceto eu que sou japonesa. Então eu tentei participar algumas vezes das festas brasileiras.
Podemos falar sobre a relação entre as olimpíadas no Rio em 2016 e a em Tóquio em 2020. Pelo que eu vi através da TV por satélite, mostrou que os brasileiros e os estrangeiros gostaram muito da animação e da dança.
De acordo com uma amiga do Brasil, Richeli, aconteceu um boom na economia devido aos brasileiros terem tido oportunidades de emprego para as olimpíadas.
Entretanto, assim que acabou, a economia piorou. Por exemplo, a companhia que ela trabalhava faliu um mês depois que ela se demitiu.
Nós, japoneses, devemos aprender com a nossa sociedade através dessa história.
Vamos começar o tema principal!
“Por quê os japoneses, como imigrantes, foram para o Brasil antes de cerca de 100 anos atrás?”
Eles passaram fome no Japão nesse tempo? Ou o governo japonês queria colonizar o Brasil?
Na antiga cultura japonesa, todos os bens eram passados dos pais para o primeiro filho, então o segundo filho tinha que correr atrás do seu próprio subsídio. Por isso, muitas famílias japonesas tinham que viajar para outros países para trabalhar. Além disso, em 1904 o Japão e a Rússia estavam em guerra. Apesar do Japão ter vencido a guerra, sua economia era pobre. Essa é a razão para os japoneses terem ido para o Brasil no começo do século 20.
Outra razão é que o governo brasileiro precisava de trabalhadores estrangeiros nas fazendas porque a escravidão tinha sido abolida em 1888.
Finalmente, 781 japoneses chegaram no Porto de Santos, em São Paulo, em 1908, como os primeiros imigrantes.
Em resumo, eu admiro bastante os brasileiros japoneses que eu conheci ao longo da minha vida. Isso me fez ter mais orgulho e apreço pelos ancestrais japoneses, que foram os pioneiros com grande espírito desbravador. Desde que eu cheguei na Austrália, eu vejo como é difícil viver no exterior, especialmente com uma cultura e língua diferente. Por causa disso, eu consigo imaginar o quão difícil foi trabalhar no Brasil 100 anos atrás. Eu realmente estou orgulhosa.
Nice meeting Japanese Brazillians in Australia
Now, I'm a student of Oxford House College on the Gold Coast in Australia ,and I met many Brazilians and two Japanese Brazilians in English class. I was curious about "Why Japanese people as immigrants went to Brazil around 100 years ago?". I was haunted by this simple question, so I cut school today, forgive me Chris!
I've met 2 Japanese Brazilians through the English classes. I felt they have a beautiful and storong Japanese spirit even more than mordern Japanese living in Japan.
I want to introduce them.
Firstly, I met a briliant lady whose name is Paloma Yaemi Shimada. She is "Sansei", 3rd generation immigrant. Her grandmother was born in Parana which was Japanese Colony in Brazil. She learned Japanese as first language. Her father is second generation Japanese, and of course her paternal grand parents are pure Japanese.
Her father is pure Japanese in way of blood line, but perhaps he may have brazilian identity culturally.
Paloma was a lawyer at the age of just 29 yeas old in Brazil, but she said "I'm going to
change my job and work as a professional make up artist."
We spent time together only 3 weeks in the class, though we got close to each other in a flash because I think we had special feeling for each other.
I gave a hand writing a letter for her and her grand mother when she was leaving. After one month, she sent me a letter as a birthday card from Thailand, where she went on a sight seeing trip. Then, I wrote back to her in Brazil.
In this technorogical era, we can make contact by air mail. It costs about 2 dollars, then it takes about one month to reach each place. This big process makes us feel a special love in our friendship.
Secondly, I have to show you this great man whose name is Rodrigo Okada. He came to my class one month before I graduated. He is also 3rd generation but his race is completely Japanese blood, in addition he was born in Okayama Japan. Immideately after his birth, his parents went back to Brazil and he grew up there. It was not until he became an adult that he visited Japan in 2008.
His looks and behavior are Brazilian style in spite of his Japanese pure race. So I had complicated feelings that I couldn't discribe by words in a proper way when I saw him.
I think you can say it is common that most 3rd generation Japanese Brazilians can't speak the Japanese language. They know some words of greeting and numbers like couting 1 to 10, but they don't speak in the usual day.
You can feel the Japanese taste in their personality, because you can find that they 2 are very caring and considerate if someone faces difficulties.
Therefore, Meeting them inspired my curiousity of Japanese immigrants.
Sometimes, my class was all Brazilians except me who is Japanese. So I tried to take part in Brazilian parties a few times.
We can talk about the Olympic relationship from the Rio Olympics in 2016 to Tokyo Olympics in 2020. It was on a Japanese satelite TV that I saw in Japan that Brazilian and foreign people really enjoyed the animation movie and dance performance.

According to a friend of mine Richeli from Brazil, There was a business boom in the economy because people in Brazil had employment opportunities for the Olympics.
However, It had no sooner finished than the economy got worse. For example, her company had been bunkrupt one month after she quit the job.
We Japanese must learn lessons for our society from this story.
Lets begin the main theme!
"Why Japanese people as immigrants went to Brazil before around 100 years ago?".
Did they starve in Japan in those days? or Japanese government wanted to colonise Brazilian land?
In the old Japanese culture, all assets were passed downt to the first son from their parents, so the second son had to get money from other places and a job also. That's why many Japanese family as guest worker needed to go abroad. Furthermore, in 1904 Japan and Russia were at war. Eventhough Japan won the war, they had a poor economy. These are reasons why Japanese people went to Brazil at the begining of 20 century.
As another reason, the Brazilian government needed foreign workers in farm areas because they abolished the law of slavery by African people in 1888.
Finally, 781 Japanese people arrived at Santos haven at Sao Paulo in 1908 as first emigrants.
To sum up, I really admire Japanese Brazilians through I met them in my real life. And, also it made me proud and appreciate for Japanese ancestors who were pioneers had great frontier splits. Since I have come to Australia I can undestand how difficult to live abroad especially different culture and language. Accordingly, I can imagine how much hard work in Brazil 100 years ago. Im proud of them indeed.
